6 Tips for Dissertation Time Management

If you are a final-year undergraduate student or postgraduate student, now is the time to plan or start writing your dissertation.

A dissertation, which is a completed research project at the end your undergraduate or postgraduate course in a topic of your choosing.

Writing your dissertation can be stressful and time-consuming. Some students always dream if somebody could “write my dissertation for me”. But if your time management skills are good, it is highly likely for you to cope with it!

You may feel overwhelmed when you start to think about your dissertation. It’s easy for you to become complacent about writing and planning, only to realize that the deadline is right around the corner.

These six tips will help you stick to deadlines if you have trouble sticking to them.

Make a timeline of your dissertation

A timeline can be used to track your progress, whether it is on paper, on paper, or on your phone.

Divide your dissertation into sections and determine the time each section should be completed. These timings are important. If you don’t, your dissertation will not be completed on time.

You will feel more motivated and less stressed if you set realistic goals. This allows you to break down the dissertation into manageable chunks rather than let it overwhelm you.

For your dissertation writing, you should schedule regular time slots in your week

Contrary to popular belief you don’t have to write your dissertation every day. As long as you do it consistently, you can. You can set aside time for your dissertation, just as you would time for the gym. It’s important that you dedicate time to your dissertation. However, it is not about how many hours you spend on it.

Some people find it helpful to think of the uni day as a 9-5 job and work only within those hours. This gives structure to the day. Others prefer to work in a more irregular pattern. For example, they may prefer to work at night or morning. Decide what works best for you and stick with it.

Do your research

Make a list of the sources that you would like to use in your dissertation. Your supervisor can help you make a list and then visit your university library to find out what books are available on the subject. You can also search online for these resources using Google Scholar.

Next, start to read your sources. Make sure you take notes and keep track of page numbers and titles. It will be much easier to refer back to these sources in the future.

Prioritize your tasks

Prioritizing is crucial when it comes dissertation writing. Prioritize the most important tasks and set a timeline to determine when they should be completed.

You can make a list with smaller tasks that take less time so that you have a break from the current task and can return to them when you are ready. You’ll be productive even if you procrastinate.

You might also want to keep a notebook nearby to record any ideas you have while writing. This will allow you to come back to them later.

Make sure your supervisor is kept informed

A supervisor will be assigned to you when you are writing your dissertation. They will help you navigate the process. Your supervisors will be happy to assist you with any issues you may have. Ask any questions about your dissertation.

You should also keep your supervisor informed about what you are doing. You will feel motivated to continue and will get valuable feedback from your supervisor if you report back to them about the progress.

Start writing!

It is up to you to decide what works best for you when you begin writing your dissertation. Some prefer to complete all their research before writing. Others prefer to write and then continue their research as needed.

You should be aware that writing can lead to additional research. Make sure you have enough time for this.

Sometimes you may find yourself writing poorly and start to regret it. Keep going, even if you realize this. It’s still progress, even if it’s not perfect right now. It’s possible to go back and make changes later.
